Following the early deaths of his half-brother and two sons, Christiaan became the natural chief over most of the Griqua during the 1830s. His authoritylier at Bethlehem remains contested, however, until the dispatch of a government commission in 1841 reported in favor of Pretorius. He was recognised by British colonial officials in South Africa as the tradicional Griqua leader from 1842.
